On 26 September, the WBII held a panel discussion with Lisa Hall and Ugne Marchionno on collaboration strategies for small entrepreneurs and creative professionals. They talked about partnership building, leadership approaches, financial management and technology integration. Lisa and Ugne also gave some practical insights into successful collaborative business models and trust-based relationships. The discussion was open and active with many lessons learned and ideas explored.
What is collaboration?
Ugne and Lisa each focussed on different aspects of collaboration.
Ugne distinguished between partnership (long-term goal-oriented relationships) and collaboration (project-based contractual work). She operates as a strategic business navigator, serving as the focal point for client relationships while collaborating with freelancers and small businesses to deliver comprehensive solutions.
Lisa emphasised the Aristotelian principle that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’, describing how collaboration elevates creative work beyond individual capabilities. Her business has evolved from solo web design to managing a team of 5-7 collaborators, with some working on an almost daily basis.
Finding and building partnerships
Both speakers emphasised the importance of networking and patience in finding the right collaborators. Lisa’s breakthrough came through a WBII member, Vinita Salomé, during a business photo collaboration that revealed the ‘gold’ potential of working together.
The key advice both speakers shared, included:
- Active listening: Understanding how different skills and approaches can complement each other.
- Trust and instinct: Relying on intuitive feelings about potential collaborators.
- Gradual development: Building relationships slowly and organically rather than rushing into partnerships.
During the ensuing discussion, the panellists and the WBII participants came to some conclusions about collaboration – what it is, why it’s important and how make it successful.
- Defining collaboration – Participants shared their perspectives on collaboration as a partnership versus a project-based arrangement.
- Finding collaborators – They discussed strategies for identifying and vetting potential collaborators, including leveraging networks and using digital tools like LinkedIn.
- Managing collaboration – They explored challenges around decision-making, communication and trust, with advice to listen, be transparent and respect each collaborator’s expertise.
- Collaboration and technology – The group discussed how AI and other digital tools can assist with collaboration but cautioned about over-reliance on technological solutions and the need for a critical eye.
- Overcoming wariness – Participants shared tips for navigating wariness or uncertainty when collaborating, emphasising the importance of self-trust and building a supportive network.
