We ask our members share a few thoughts: to introduce themselves to fellow members, and those who are interested in our community.
In this instalment, we interview Vilan van de Loo of Hoe schrijf ik een boek in 90 dagen.
Tell us about your business:
Helping entrepreneurs to write a book that helps them find more clients.
What 5 words would you choose to describe your business?
focused, direct, fun, business book
What are your most popular products or services?
Personal coaching during phone calls.
What do you like best about owning a business?
I feel the world needs more books. Owning a business enables me to write books and help others to write their books.
What or who inspired you to start your business?
Looking back, it must have been the DNA of my stubborn unconventional grandmother as no one in my family seemed to care about having a business of your own.
What makes your products/services special?
The combination of huge experience and love for what I do. That is basically it.
Who is your role model or mentor?
- Xena, warrior princess: the courage to find your own path plus the blessing of good companionship
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer: no matter how many demons are out there, it is your moral obligation to try to kill them all
- Morticia Addams: unattainable style and life icon. Maybe one day, though
What is your biggest fear?
To get married and regret it.
What motivates you on a daily basis?
The inner realisation that this is what I have to do with my life.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced?
Overcoming burnout and mourning.
What advice would you give women who are starting a business?
Do not depend on flow, inspiration or passion. Be and stay practical. Ask “how” questions.
What is your favourite business book?
Suzanne Evans: The Way You Do Anything Is the Way You Do Everything: The Why of Why Your Business Isn’t Making More Money
What are your top tips for networking?
Be aware that you have something to give. Modesty is your enemy.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I do not. My life and work are one.
What is your motto or theme song?
Climb every mountain – Mother superior in The Sound of Music
How do you relax?
I sleep. I walk. I drink water.
What place inspires you and why?
Any library and archive that shows me new material to look into.
What do you care most about, as a business owner?
To be able to share.
What are your future plans?
To develop a full service publishing house. That would be awesome.
Thank you, Vilan!
Vilan’s latest book Uit naam van de majesteit was published this summer. It tells the story of Joannes van Heutsz (1851-1924), a military man, governor and businessman in the colonial area of the Netherlands-Indies. Much to Vilan’s surprise, a discussion on colonial statues erupted and she was asked by several radio programmes to give her point of view.
