In this instalment, we interview Allyson Kukel of Rooted in Calm
Tell us about your business:
I help my clients cultivate balance in their life, providing support and confidence to live purposefully, in accordance with their values, goals, and desires. I work with corporations to translate mandated wellbeing from a task checking activity into wellbeing that works. My style is accessible, inclusive, and humble.
What 5 words would you choose to describe your business?
Accessible, supportive, empowering, relaxed & fun
What are your most popular products or services?
Wellbeing that Works for corporate clients and Bespoke Services; 3-5 month tailored programs for indviduals.
What do you like best about owning a business?
I love trying new things and tapping into my creativity, from Canva to new client services I enjoy trying new recipes to create masterpieces that I am proud of and best serve my clients.
What or who inspired you to start your business?
My Great Grandma, she was a single mother, also raised my mom and uncle all the while running her own hair salon.
What makes your products/services special?
I am that perfect dash of flavor that makes my services so special. Honestly, my clients connect with my experience. Life and work experience, education, travel, love for cats… culminates in compassion, empathy and the ability to put someone fully at ease while we tackle so of the hardest bits of life.
Who is your role model or mentor?
The brave women that have walked before me, paving the way for the life I have. Especially those that have stood in the shadows, they have often done the hardest work, which we must be especially grateful for.
What is your biggest fear?
Dying before I am ready.
What motivates you on a daily basis?
Creating a business that I believe in from my head to my toes.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced?
Uncertainty. Safety and security are two of my core values and running your own business often flies in the face of them.
What advice would you give women who are starting a business?
It is okay to not know it all or do it all. Ask for advice and get help, free up a little extra time for yourself, your going to need it – if this was easy everyone would do it.
What is your favourite business book?
The 4-Hour Workweek – it was the first one I read and it has been a goal to get to a 4 day work week.
What are your top tips for networking?
Wear comfortable shoes
Give yourself a pep-talk before you leave

Find a toilet/bathroom/WC – adjust yourself inside and out, smile to yourself and say “I’ve got this” before you step into the madness
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Scheduling, it isn’t sexy but it is how I make sure that I have balance. Sunday are sacred.

How do you relax?
The obvious: yoga, meditation, reading…Netflix The less obvious: petting the cat, it works so good and it is great for both of us Not obvious: traveling
What place inspires you and why?
Facing west at sunset, there is a quiet that falls and a deep since of calm that settles over everyone watching the sun drop just below the horizon, is mesmerizing.
What do you care most about, as a business owner?
I want to do the right thing, for my clients, myself and the world we live in.
What are your future plans?
Embrace running a business beyond the shadow of Corona, respectful and supportive of what is unfolding in Ukraine. Lean into the women that I am evolving into. Integrate movement with mindfulness that will ensure my clients leave feeling like they went to a spa.
